In late 2016 Octo-Grip inventor Philip Stime was frustrated
with the "pop-up" grip accessory he had been using on his smartphone. It was awkward to use & uncomfortable to hold, barely keeping his phone from slipping out of his hand and hitting the floor. It struck him, "There had to be a better
way!"
Experimenting with cardboard and shipping tape, Phil created an eight-sided collapsible device that simulates a glove, gently gripping your middle fingers instead of you having to tightly grip the edges of your phone/tablet to hold on to it.
After obtaining a U.S. Patent for his design in April of 2020, early prototypes were created for testing the design. And thus, was born the Octo-Grip…
Early prototypes of Octo-Grip were made of a flexible plastic
that collapsible hinges could be created out of, opening to a position
simulating how a glove holds onto your fingers and then closing to a low
profile when not in use.
After recruiting an engineering firm to develop manufactured prototypes for field testing, the Octo-Grip design was refined to deliver greater ease of use and durablility, after which it was injection molded in finished product.
The result is the glove like grip of the Octo-grip. Made of high strength injection-molded polycarbonate and flexible collapsible living hinges created out of durable elastomer, Octo-Grip works by opening up to a position simulating how a glove holds onto your fingers, and then closed to a low profile when not in use.
